Cybercrime and cyber-enabled crime have been increasing exponentially, straining law enforcement capacity and outpacing law enforcement technical capabilities. While the criminals have become adept at operating in cyberspace, law enforcement has, in many cases, been slow to exploit the unprecedented investigative opportunities this new realm offers. For all crimes, mobile phones and computers routinely contain evidence that is critical to successful investigation. Encryption and obfuscation techniques often frustrate law enforcement efforts to access this evidence.

Through academic programs, research, and technical training, F1RST works with partners to develop law enforcement’s capabilities to investigate crimes, pursue criminals, and conduct digital forensics. Consistent with law enforcement’s crime prevention mission, it also promotes cyber hygiene and education within the community.
